Establishing Medical Records
Although medical professionals will have records of your treatment, you can also take proactive steps to be sure that you have a complete medical history of your disability. First, you will need to see a physician in order to confirm that you have a physical or mental problem. If you cannot afford to seek treatment, check with your state to see if you qualify for state aid. While Social Security might pay for an exam down the road, it’s usually preferable if you see a primary-care doctor before you seek benefits.
Discuss Your Medical Condition with the Physician
Social Security will compare the information that you gave to the physician with the information that you gave to them. They will want to know if the information matches and if you reported any health concerns to your doctor before you applied for disability. If the information is the same, they will be more likely to believe and approve your claims.
Attend Your Medical Appointments and Treatment Plans as Recommended
Even if you are eligible for benefits, the SSA could deny your claim if you do not follow their advice regarding any recommended medical treatment. They expect you to do your part in order to recover. If you do not, they might conclude that you are not serious about getting better.
